Joe Lewis hails from Honolulu, Hawaii and is based in Bangkok, Thailand and travels regularly throughout Asia. He has owned, operated and consulted fitness and sports clubs since 1967, and in Asia since 1978. He has acquired decades of experience in the sports & fitness industry and is widely respected for his achievements in Hawaii and Asia. His lengthy and distinguished career in the business began while attending university when he worked part time for the Kaiser Hawaii Kai Development Corporation at the Hawaii Kai Recreation Center as a lifeguard and
swim instructor. In 1968, Joe was promoted to the position of General Manager and for the next ten-years transformed the recreation center into the Hawaii Kai Tennis & Swim Club, which became one of Hawaii’s leading and private clubs. Joe coached the Kalani High School Swim Team and lead them to 3 State Championships.
1978, Joe became a business partner with Clark Hatch and opened the first international operated fitness center in Indonesia at the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel Jakarta. During the next 5-years, Joe was responsible for developing, opening and operating nine clubs throughout Southeast Asia, which included the Jakarta Hilton Executive Sports Club & the Jakarta Kalapa Kading Sports Club. During this period, Joe was appointed by the Sultan of Yogyakarta and 2nd Vice President of Indonesia as the strength and conditioning coach for the Indonesian National Swim Team.
In 1984, Joe established along with his partner David M. Lloyd a new company Club Performance Systems and from 1984 until 1989, they developed and operated twelve clubs throughout Asia as owner/operator or as management consultants. This included the Swiss Grand Hotel Sports Club, a 3,000 square meter indoor facility in Seoul, Korea that opened prior to the 1988 Summer Olympics. In that same year they consulted on the Hyatt Macau’s multi-million dollar 2,500 square meter Taipa Island Sports Club.
I988, Joe developed and introduced to the club industry in Asia The Core System of Club Management, which is widely used in clubs throughout the region. He has been a guest lecturer at seminars conferences and workshops throughout Asia. In 1995 Joe and David and their team hosted the first ever Fitness Convention & Tradeshow in Bangkok with International Fitness presenters with 800 participants from Thailand and Southeast Asia attending. The convention was repeated again in 1996 with great success. In addition Joe was the fitness and health columnist for the Bangkok Post and Phuket Gazette.
March 2003, Joe was hired as consultant by Exertainment Co., LTD a joint venture project between EGV Entertainment Co., LTD and ALMAC International Co., LTD to develop a mega fitness club for the new EGV Metropolis Entertainment Center at Big C Rajadamri Plaza in the heart of Bangkok. In late 2008, Joe launched with partner/associate Kaivan Choomwattana HEALTHONE THAILAND (HOT) to provide top of the line fitness equipment and services throughout the Kingdom.
Joe’s passion and mission now is leading a “New Fitness Revolution” in Asia that encourages independent fitness clubs to become unique and differentiate themselves from the competition by offering equipment, programs and services that attract the “not-yet-fit” and ageing population to join their clubs. In August 2010, Geoff Hampton founder of the Weekly Fitness Challenge appointed Joe as Asia Ambassador with the the goal of educating, motivating & leading the not-yet-fit to get fit in Asia.
